Around 50 automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Police then discovered numerous other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police say preliminary tests indicate the fluid was probably human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its source; investigators are not yet aware of any physical harm in connection with the event," they added.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have requested to the community for details.
A high-ranking official said the incident left him stunned and needed to be solved promptly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist attack in 2020," he posted on online, recalling the killing of nine people by a assailant targeting people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
