The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
