Crew Member Reveals Emotional Distress After Wave of Backlash After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since achieving her goal, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the well-wishers whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she said.
She concluded that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
Flight Details
The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of outer space.
The diverse crew also comprised experts in different industries.
The company behind the flight is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
