2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Shift Follows Poor Feedback
Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive a key figure informed staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had shown the necessity for a more defined game identity.
The president expressed that the team is now overhauling the project with a refreshed vision, aiming to address player expectations.
Trend of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement follows a similar step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the entire message from Ismailer's memo:
Team—
I know you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and creative developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that partnership to continue.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was enlightening. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the requirement for a sharper brand.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You took the input to consideration and reimagined the title with a revitalized goal - one that’s positioned to achieve its potential to our audience.
The trust in this project increases every day. To further the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the new Director of 31st Union. Following several months of discussions, Ben starts with us on next week.
Ben’s management and background in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having spent the recent years producing and overseeing some of the most recognizable series in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.
Please join me in greeting Ben soon. We are all looking forward to keep observing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the months to ahead.
The President

Title Information and Vision
Project Ethos was announced in last year together with a public demo. Initially, the developers described the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling step forward on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch reads. "Challenge the rivals with fresh skills, challenges, and challenges that shift every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, gamble everything, and pray your squad can secure victory? The decision is up to you."
The game lacks an announced debut schedule or supported systems, but enthusiasts can look forward to further news as production continues.
